In recent weeks, our Energy Team has taken part in several industry events that offered valuable perspectives on current issues and future directions in the energy sector. Below is a summary of some key insights that emerged in discussions around district heating, biogas, and the electricity grid.
District Heating Days 2025 – Focus on Security and Electrification
At the District Heating Days in Lappeenranta, organized by Energiateollisuus and Adato, participants heard a wide range of presentations and engaged in in-depth discussions about the future of the entire sector. Preparedness and security emerged as cross-cutting themes.
- Security of supply and resilience: The continuity of the energy system requires strong partnerships and networks.
- Managing peak loads: Finding economically sustainable solutions for reserve and peak power use is an increasing challenge.
- Electrification of heat: The role of electricity in production is growing, putting additional pressure on transmission capacity.
- Flexibility of electric boilers: In the future, electric boilers will play a significant role in balancing the entire energy system.
Biogas Training – Potential Waiting for a Breakthrough
At the biogas training event organized by the Finnish Gas Association, Suomen Biokierto, and Biokaasu ry, biogas was highlighted as a versatile energy source with still largely untapped potential.
- So far, growth has been slow due to high costs and limited capacity, despite the abundance of raw materials.
- Applications range from road and maritime transport to industry as well as heat and power generation.
- Stricter climate policies, the growing emphasis on security of supply, and customer interest in green solutions could all accelerate the sector’s competitive advantage.
We are closely following how the market develops in Finland and across Europe – and what opportunities it opens up for our clients.
Electricity Grid Seminar – Towards Harmonized Network Tariffs
In September, we joined the stakeholder event organized by the Finnish Energy Authority, which focused on the harmonization of network tariffs. The event brought together a wide range of stakeholders, from network companies to researchers and industry representatives.
- Capacity charges became a hot topic: they are currently applied in very different ways, making it harder for customers to understand.
- The updated Electricity Market Act introduces new guidelines and grants the Energy Authority powers to further refine harmonization.
- Cost reflectivity and efficiency remain key objectives in the development of future tariff structures.
The event strengthened our understanding of the sector’s current challenges and how we can better support electricity grid operators through the transition.
The energy sector is undergoing constant transformation, and district heating, biogas, and electricity grids alike are seeking new solutions to secure supply, improve cost efficiency, and enable the green transition. Spring has long-standing experience in district heating, biogas, and electricity grid operations, as well as across a wide range of other energy-related fields – from strategic questions to operational development and M&A.
